Research tree seems to be really unballanced at the moment, there are some useless techs eg. thermal drives and a lot of useless projects mostly ship drive variants and ship weapons, even if you want to use lasers for example you usally not need all variants.
I imagine two ways to mitigate this.
1. reaserching one type of eg. solid state nuclear drive could make all other similar drives cheaper to research and/or increase the chance projects will be avaible to research. or even every finished project could give minor bonus to its research field similar to examining alien sites gives bonus to xeno research. Other example: researching small IR laser canon could make all other IR lasers cheaper to research, make them more likely to appear on the list, and give a small bonus future to weapons research.
2. rearrange the tree in a way that reasearching all or most of now useless techs become a prerequisite to the best projects from certain brach eg. to get advanced pulsar drive you would need several inferior nuclear drive projects researched.

Combining the two is obviously also possible.
