Deception hack: took control of... a civilian?

Immediately select the Specialist, Duane Daniels, and hack the tower. He's a god-tier hacker so it should guaranteed succeed the roll for Deception. Notice the... curious choice of mind-control target. I'm unsure if this target was a faceless (but there's no dark event active that puts faceless on missions right now???) that simply didn't transform after mind-controlling, or if it was legit a random civilian, but I didn't receive vision of the area around the unknown mind-controlled 'enemy' and I certainly didn't receive control of them.

EDIT:

Several turns later, the same Specialist used Full Override and successfully Mastered a drone in another pod. I got control of the drone as expected, but suddenly I ALSO "mind controlled" an Advent Elite Officer in another pod. :? ????

EDIT 2:

Well... that was an interesting ride.

MANY turns later, I finally manage to evac from the mission. Notably, a few turns after I lost mind control of the Elite Officer that I SOMEHOW got control of when I Full Override hacked the drone. After I evacuated, the game panned over to the civilian I supposedly took control of with Deception and mentioned that Mind Control was lost. :?

In 1.3, you can rarely get a Faceless Civilian in a mission. These are the same ones that the vanilla game put on Terror missions, where hack objectives do not exist. It sounds like you randomly got Deception on one of these, but the code for transforming the civilian into a Faceless has no idea how to work in this situation.

The mind controlled officer was a result of a bug that's been around since vanilla. It causes some tower hack rewards like deception to fire again when you use haywire (or full override) after having hacked a tower.

So you got deception and mc'd the civilian. Then you used haywire and the deception reward fired again.

I don't know the full extent (i don't think it will give you supply or Intel rewards twice, for instance), but it's been around a long time. I think it used to even cause the mass-stun effect on the network tower missions to re-proc.

No idea what was up with the mc'd civilian :-)
