Hello all!

When you start a new campaign in long war 2, what exactly does checking/unchecking a DLC do? I read the google introduction to LW2 doc. but I want to make sure I get what's going on. For alien rulers, if unchecked, do they just appear as enemies naturally as advent strength increases? Is it wise to have this on? And for Shen's last gift, if unchecked you will get SPARKS, but only through a proving ground project? Will no story mission appear to get a free one?

Yes, the checkbox is for the narrative part of the DLC and not the content itself. Your description is correct.

For me, I don't like when an alien ruler suddenly pops up in a mission because I can't control when it would happen. If on the other hand I check the box for alien ruler DLC, what will happen is that I will be given a mission and I usually just leave it until I reach better weaponry.

As for Shen's last gift, the mission is fun in my opinion and you can get a free SPARK which is buffed in LW2 so I always do it.
