PSA on Haywire and Trojan

For those who don't read the bug report forum, hopefully this thread will prevent a soldier death or two before 1.3 releases.

First a quick primer on Haywire Protocol. Ever noticed that Haywire targeting seems inconsistent? Even in vanilla, sometimes you can haywire a bot all the way across the map. Other times, the bot is much closer, but you're not allowed to target it. I never understood what was going on here, but now that I know it seems obvious. Haywire uses the squadsight rules. So you can hack a bot that is outside your visual range as long as a friendly unit can see it AND the hacker has an unobstructed sightline to the target.

You may also have noticed that the Trojan perk can be... unreliable. Sometimes it works great, other times no dice.

So here's the PSA: the Trojan perk will currently NOT trigger if haywire was performed via squadsight. If you want Trojan to work properly make sure your specialist can actually see the bot that he or she is hacking.

Thanks to tracktwo for figuring out the problem!

Has this been posted to the bug subforum?

EDIT: I see it has!

Thank you for the update!! A few missions ago I had a MEC controlled while finishing off a pod, and knew the MEC was on his last turn of control. But, I had Trojan, so I concentrated on finishing off the active pod and I'd finish off the MEC next turn since it would be trojaned. As expected, the MEC hack ends that turn, but instead of losing its actions, it turns and micro-missiles two of my squad members. You can imagine my surprise... now I know why and how to avoid it. I was going to bug report it but I see it's already been reported.

Just to clarify for me, do you need to be in visual range when you first do the hack or at the time the hack ends (and Trojan takes effect)?

Thanks.

You need to be in visual range when you hack the unit. That applies the Trojan effect, which will trigger when the effect of the hack ends, regardless of where your specialist is at that point.
