Re: Must-have Soldier Perks

I came into this topic fully expecting to see a discussion about "Failsafe" and how it should probably be a GTS unlock for the whole class (bring back GTS unlocks!), and not just a perk that you always take because the other perks on this rank are questionable at best (Why is Field Surgeo...

Re: what affects environmental damage?

Quite interestingly, muton grenades do more environmental damage than your own even for basic mutons (10 vs. 9). This may add to confirmation bias, I guess. Mk2 and Mk3 muton grenades do A LOT more, on par with your rockets. This still doesn't explain at all why non-explosive weapons, even with env....

Re: Haven invaded and wiped

- it takes 6 rebels on intel to have roughly a 70% chance to catch the "supply raid" in time I've read about these numbers a bunch of times now and I wonder if it was tested thoroughly. There seems to be a lot of variables in it: 1) Liberated sectors will get a bonus 1.2 multiplier on job...

Re: what affects environmental damage?

This isn't actually my experience with plasma grenades. I realize in the ini files, the environ damage is listed as the same, but my Needler tends to blow up cover fairly easily with his plasma grenades, and nobody ever really did with frag grenades, even with sapper (with exception of super easy s...

Re: Recovering from loss

so, VIP extracts? You don't send an actual squad, what do you do? You aren't in conceal? Cheesing it out via officer Shinobi with Oscar Mike is usually a way to go. Advance a little until your civve activates a pod (on aliens turn, of course), then just oscar mike + command him to run the remaining...

Re: what affects environmental damage?

I secretly love the fact that Sapper is so worthless, because it makes Needler, for an explosive grenadier, such an easy decision. It works on a great deal of low cover objects. But yes, high cover objects are mostly out of question (especially trees, they're very hard to destroy) until you get eit...

Re: Advent attacks on viper-snared soldier

I'd say it's the only reason that viper constriction is actually dangerous. Without this behavior - it's an extremely weak attack (and people will be cheesing it by baiting vipers to constrict instead of shoot/spit, such as it was in vanilla). I'm okay with toning down the tongue attack, so that it ...

Re: Classes and perks discussion

I don't like how poorly the technical scales late game. This is a rather bad moment, I agree. But as to solutions - there may be different approaches. For example, I'm pretty fine with AoE damage attacks falling off in efficiency by the late game, if they could be used for cover destruction instead...

Re: Classes and perks discussion

if you say so... but the core xcom 2 game was not a good strategy game... this is going to be really harsh, but true is true. the design/mechanics/balance/meta were just very amateur. It's not a difficult game, but that doesn't turn it into "not good". Even so, vanilla XCOM2 Legendary tri...

Re: Must-have Soldier Perks

And a Hair Trigger would improve reaction shots (although weapon mod slots could be tight). Don't forget that OW shots suffer 0.7 to-hit modifier unless you're just breaking concealment. Hair Trigger bonus only partially counteracts this, so OW + Hair Trigger is still less aim (on soldiers with goo...

Re: Must-have Soldier Perks

trihero made a very good argument about having Long Watch in another topic. What it does is open up the Squad Sight for Overwatch shots. Most of the time with targets visible, the Sharpshooter isn't going to go on Overwatch. But when a pod has been killed off, that then means the Sharpshooter can s...

Re: Must-have Soldier Perks

Not a single one in this list is a "must have". Most don't even come close. Two closest to "must-have" are Jammer and Revival Protocol, but both aren't necessarily an autopick depending on your soldiers' lineup. If you can afford a separate officer for non-RF missions, Jammer is ...

Re: Classes and perks discussion

it was clear to me that Firaxis had no clue how to replicate the appeal and balance of LW1 into xcom2, and instead just threw together some things to drastically change the "meta" of the game, but it was proven that those changes were pathetic and made for a joke of a strategy game (sorry...

Re: Classes and perks discussion

So where are your details on other classes, and what grenadier nerfs do you propose? I have nothing to defend here, I'm awaiting to discuss what you have in mind. I see extremely little value in discussing specific perk arrangements right now. First off, it's one of the few things that's always ske...

Re: Classes and perks discussion

And I don't even agree with your count, I see lone wolf/instincts/shadowstrike/rapid fire = 4 offensive perks that help ranged shinobis kill things better, it's unclear why you have a separate category for "multi-shot" perk). So your 1.5 to 4.5 looks very misleading, and not something I t...

Re: Classes and perks discussion

What specifically is this "proper mixing" you're talking about? If we're looking at Shinobi: 1) Ranged Shinobi has access to 1.5 offense buffs, 4.5 defense buffs (lone wolf being 1/2 of both), and a multi-shot perk. Technically, Shadowstrike is offensive, but its functionality is extremel...

This video is a solid showing of quality squad play with assaults as the feature, on a wide range of missions from light to swarming. This video shows a gameplay where it's demonstrated that high-level Assaults, especially built as much into ranged combat as possible, e.g. with slug shots and so ar...

Re: Classes and perks discussion

What specific changes would you like to see to defensive skills/perks? It's starting to get funny when first you insist on reading my posts, and then asks a question where I can simply self-quote previous post: Defensive perks don't need any buffs at all. They just need to be properly mixed with da...

Re: Classes and perks discussion

I see absolutely nothing "long and complex" about finding a soldier with negative defense and stacking him with armor/dodge. Zero complexity. And it will just end up in 1 dead soldier. Stacking must meet certain breakpoints, otherwise all it takes is 1 lucky hit to end all the "tanki...

b) you can hide your negative defense soldier behind low cover, and he will get targeted as long as everyone else is in cover, because he has the lowest defense. You don't get flanked behind low cover. What? You do get flanked in any cover, quite easily so if enemies are close enough. This is going...

Re: Classes and perks discussion

I disagree with many of OPs sentiments on classes, I think they're more useful than he suggests. I think I stated quite plainly that ALL classes are useful as of now. They aren't equally useful, though, and certain specific builds aren't very effective (but there are other builds). Their chance to ...

Re: Classes and perks discussion

More replies: It works out fine for low aim rangers. You take the middle row of talents and stick them into havens. They are good faceless hunters. I can imagine there might be an interesting stealth strategy with SMG/double barrels rangers as well like if you have to fight, you will end the 3-4 man...

Re: Classes and perks discussion

When you tried it, what didn't work for you? All you did was say "it wasn't so hot." Erm. You didn't bother to read that up I guess - I told you before that the whole endeavor depends on a) enemies shooting the one soldier that you'd want them to shoot; b) avoiding any flanks with that so...
