Archer Grenade Range too small

Hello,
I though that with 'Bombard' my Mech Archer would get significant range but it is just barely more than line of sight range and when I try to sneak up on enemies rarely ever works. Also I put the grenade launcher on a Marauder Mech and the range seemed to be the same. What am I doing wrong?

It's true, the standard MEC grenade range is 17 mobility points (about 11.5 tiles), which is just barely more than the soldier grenade range of 15 mob (10 tiles). You would think that a MEC can launch much farther than a soldier, even without perks.
Bombard increases the range by 50% which means a little less than 17 tiles, and with the grenade radius of 4 tiles (5 tiles with Danger Zone), you can in theory hit a pod that's out of range (18 tiles) with an Archer MEC. It's possible with mines too, but the blast radius is smaller so it's more difficult.

What about the Marauder? Why should it have longer range than other MECs?

I found out its possible to mod the range if you want. In this example, with the grenade launcher specifically.

Find you game folder, then navigate to "XCom-Enemy-Unknown\XEW\XComGame\Config".

Open Defaultgamecore.ini

CTRL+F then look for "iType=eItem_MecGrenadeLauncher"

Scroll over to the right and you should see an entry that says "iRange=17" on the same line. Looks like that number is tile range, so change it to whatever you feel is right.
