Times like that, I wish tripping Overwatch gave a "Are you sure you want to fuck up your day?" prompt like friendly-fire orders do.

It's less of a problem now that I have 100+ hours in, but when I first started playing the game trained me to think of the right mouse button like the "go back" arrow on a web browser.

This works on every menu in the game and all the places in the Avenger. Sometimes also in the tactical map, but other times it means "run to whatever random tile the cursor is on".

When I first started playing I save scummed so relentlessly that nobody ever died, but it got kind of boring so I stopped reloading for bad RNG.

I'm still nowhere near an Iron Man, but also haven't even finished my first campaign because I keep restarting after realizing that there were major fundamental aspects of the game that I didn't understand. Like the fact that you can buy reinforcements in the armory. I feel kind of dumb that I played for about 40 hours before noticing that tab. Even then it was only because I got the geoscape perk that made them free and wondered what that meant.

Haha no need to feel stupid, things like that happen all the time for me (no noticing mechanics and features)
And I've had the same experience, I've started out save scumming, but it became boring because there's no real challenge.
But I think a save scumming phase might be necessary for every player in some part of their life so they can learn without maximum frustration. Once you know the rules and the world you have to navigate, you can let the game punish you for mistakes because you COULD have known better. Or because you've just had bad luck, which also just... happens.

You're gonna love this:

Background: This is beginning of campaign, and I take a strong team of 5 (shinobi, technical, assault, sawnoff ranger and specialist) to a Rescue VIP from ADVENT cell mission. 18 turns map, nice. I scoot around towards the cell, see a pod of 2 and a solo drone, set up a possible flamer ambush but the pod moves away from me. So I move to the jail building (the 1 floor kind) and spot a pod of 3 (officer, sentry, sentry). On the roof. Oh boy! The pod of two moves out of sight, the drone is still in view and I know this is my chance.

Next up: I rocket the pod of 3, hits nicely, kills 1 sentry, leaves officer with 3hp, sentry with 1 hp. Drone moves in. I move the ranger to a nice location with high cover both towards the officer and the pod of two that will come in eventually, checking if it activates but there're some sight blockers. No activation, Point Blank kill the drone. Next up I move in the assault inside the jail to another high cover spot, frag the officer and the sentry that grouped up. Whaddaya know, min roll on the officer, it lives with 1hp. Fine. Move closer with specialist, sadly no range on frag and the officer is behind a box and the flashbang won't get to him. Damnit. I Aid Protocol the Technical because he's in low cover. Brace for impact, the initial pod of two might come in, but I got high cover towards them. I scout a pod of two behind the jail building with the Shinobi, I place the Shinobi on top of the roof.

What happens: Officer moves closer to the window where the Ranger is, I exhale "phew, he's gonna mark". No. Officer shoots the Ranger, graces an 11% for 2 (no biggie, got ablative), reduces the cover around him and SETS IT ABLAZE! Beginning of my turn, my Ranger... Is ON FIRE!.

So I try to run to the evac, the fire tics for 3! The Ranger had 4hp, and he won't make it. Goddamn it I rage.

And then I notice I had a fountain within dash range of the fire spot. :x

So I reloaded to the turn he caught on fire. To hell with it.

8-man GOp squad, rampaging on a Hack mission. 7 turns in, I realise I forgot to throw the evac flare - it takes 8 turns when you're on a 16% infil 8-man mission. Restart mission. RNF starts at 6-man and the first one came at turn 6. There was no way I could hold 2 more RNF.
My three 8-man GOp squad Commander campaigns:

2nd
3rd

Not really bad moment, but; Haven retal', Berserker attacked a resistance member and sent them rocketing into a building halfway across the map. Had to reload a save just to see if they'd do it again. They did, I was pleased.

The opposite of a mimimi Moment: I had the laziest haven retal ever yesterday. Was a map in Chile where I had to collect and evac as many resistance members as possible while RNF every turn.
I got lucky. 10 members to rescue, I got 8 of them. Took about 10 turns, always pods of 3. 2 Berserkers and an Archon among them, but my overwatch spark annihilated them and softened them up good.
I did not even have to use a single rocket, flamethrower or Plasma grenade. It was insane.
