AWC ??? Perks don't fit the Role

Post by Raven496 »

kk I get the need for pistol skills...and the AWC for obtaining them...but its always bugged me that the added class skills available are not from the same field of the trained soldier. General stat conditioning (aim, move, dodge and defense...etc.) would have been good too. Don't get me wrong...the perks are nice...but they don't fit.

Rangers want to be better Rangers...wouldn't they work on Ranger skills 24/7? Wouldn't getting a chance at more of those Alt skills left behind by promotions be a natural course?

Don't try to apply logic to it. The whole point of the AWC perks is to make every soldier different from each other, instead of just clones of the same spec like on Vanilla. Doesn't work your way half of the times, but when it works, works great. (Rapid deployment Smoker Specialist, Shredder Ranger :D )

Assault with Infighter, Deadshot, and Gunslinger as the first three AWC perks... and Ever Vigilant after Infighter. Can't wait to finish her close combat build!

I think the main reason that the AWC perks are random like this, is to give each soldier some individuality. Maybe your new Ranger used to live on a farm and they frequently used dynamite to remove tree stumps; now he brings Biggest Booms to the table, just for funsies. Maybe your new Gunner knows how to Fleche, because sometimes, they just need to feel the last gasp on their skin when they want to kill something 20 yards away.

In the end, AWC perks are kind of like the lottery. Some guys don't get anything suited to the job you've already given them, but that's fine, because you're never going to have enough time to train everyone all of their AWC perks anyway. Meanwhile, some guys win the lottery, and get some super amazing cool perks that make you completely re-think how you're going to use them in the field.

The goal is definitely to make them NOT fit the role. But rather to add variety to the game.

Sometimes, you get skills that are really good for the class, like Damn Good Ground and Lethal on a Ranger.

Sometimes you get skills that aren't good for the class itself, but opens up powerful other options, like getting Steady Hands, DGG and Shredder on a Grenadier. I gave that Grenadier a more multipurpose build with Chainshot and gave her an AR instead of an SMG. She can now do more than just drop her ~4 grenades per mission. Her chainshot with Shredder gives her a fairly strong single target opening burst on a single target, which may even be more useful in some cases than just dropping grenades.

And, of course, sometimes you get Salvo on a Sniper.

Some soldiers get new options and can take on exciting new builds. Some soldiers can get very good at a specific subset of their class, and be the best dedicated soldier ever. And some soldiers will get to bring a gimmick to the battlefield for a bit of versatility. There are a few duds out there (Grenade-boosting perks are the ones I have the hardest time making use of), but overall, I think it does an awful lot to make soldiers feel different from each other, without even using Not Created Equally or Hidden Potential (which can only sorta-kinda distinguish soldiers from each other).

You can also customize who is able to get what in terms of perks, or even add your own. The settings are in the AWCPack ini.

If you want to add/remove perks globally you can add them to the AWCAbilityTree_xxx lists for each of the 3 levels. To remove a perk you can simply add a semi-colon to the beginning of the line which will comment it out and cause it to be ignored. You could even add more perks to those lists, or shuffle them around into different levels.

For more class specific customizing you can add to the list below that called AWCRestrictions. These entries take a perk name and a second perk that if it exists will not be included as an option. For example you can see that Sniper cannot pickup Walk Fire. You could do the same for other perks like the grenade perks for classes that you never put grenades on. Most of the restrictions you'll see in that list are either restricting sword perks from everyone but gunners, restricting classes from getting 2 double shot perks and restricting snipers from getting anything cool.

I think overall Gunners probably get screwed the most for AWC Perks. Most of the powerful perks are already on the Gunner class perks, or are restricted from Gunners. And the sword perks just water everything else down since that little butter knife Gunner's carry is basically a sad joke.
