Some maps to Big

Post by oesis »

Something I've noticed is that maps can vary wildly in size, but the amount of time you get to accomplish the objective is fixed. This is especially noticeable on some rescue missions, where you lose all your units if you don't make it to the other side in time. On some maps it feels like you have to sprint almost every turn. Is there any plan to make the time tied to distance to objective, or make the map length more consistent?

Well, in those type of maps, especially if the objective is literally on the far side of the map, I tend to just skip all pods, take the objective and get as fast as possible away from that place.

It works really nice with your friendly Covert Ops team (2 Shinobis + 1 Specialist).

You might want to prepare for all contingencies and revise your mission plan on the go. :)

Yeah, I've not even played LW2 myself yet (still holding off until 1.1 hits, which is tantamount to near physical pain at this point) but watching xwynns on his legendary play-through really drills home the concept of objective above all else.

Thus the tactical approach of simply bypassing every single enemy and getting out undetected is the best choice every time you can pull it off as far as I can tell. Which is both awesome and correct due to the guerrilla nature of the new X-com and narrative, and also horrible since I am such a pew-pew junkie versus tracing tiles to maneuver around lines of sight for a dozen turns.

I just changed the default timers to add 2 turns to timer. It is still challenging.

Whoa...i just encountered a map that was so big, with the objectives so far away (winter fortress or something?), that even with THREE added turns, i could not get to objective on time.
I do not like the accumulated design decisions that are leading us so far away from big battles, while simultaneously forcing people to equip sub-machine guns exclusively for missions. It's great that there is finally a use for submachine guns, sure, but it is not so great that the timer/stealth/reinforcement/infiltration mechanics are weighting them so heavily.
The ak47 is the most widely used guerrilla warfare weapon on the planet. A sig-saur has negligeable usage. (mostly because of cost, but still.)

Just wait until ADVENT gets upset with you. You'll wish you could take a break from big battles and do some guerrilla ops again. :)
