Why Shinobi?

Post by ConradKurze »

I'm just curious as to why you went with the name Shinobi rather than Scout or Vanguard or Outrider, basically something less inclusive. It's especially weird because all the other classes you added have sensible/generic/not-language-specific names.
Gunner - Makes sense, their primary duty is to use heavy guns.
Assault - Close combat specialists, makes sense.
Technical - A little bit odd, but they use heavy weapons (rockets & flame throwers) so I'm guessing it is supposed to reference the fact they rely on technology.

And then there is Shinobi. A ninja/covert agent specific to feudal Japan. Not even modern Japan. It is a term that not many people would hear and know what it means. I'm just curious as to why you guys decided to go with a language-locked name?

Probably because a bunch of resistance fighters would think it would sound cool...

1) They are mammals.
2) They use swords.
3) They totally kill the agents of the [s]Shogunate[/s] ADVENT Administration.
4) They get some fries at the ADVENT Burger joint on the way home.

Sometimes the [s]farmers[/s] human race just get fed up with the [s]samurai[/s] Elders.

Edit: Somebody activate the strikethrough tag right now damnit.

Because its edgy.
It's really not that big of a problem, considering the game is already full of questionable design choices: bolt casters in the age of laser weapons, FREAKING SWORDS(ON THE BACK!) and ridiculous looking armours(especially dlc ones).

I just copy and pasted the class data ini into the Rogue class mod and changed the starting loadout.

Aside from the odd loading screen, I never have to be bothered with that weeaboo bullshit ever again.

How can you rename it? I would prefer Infiltrator or "Vanguard" as you said, I dunno what an Outrider is but it certainly sounds better than Shinobi.

Yeah those silly swords... I'll tell you something, Taliban insurgents didn't think they were that silly when a Gurkha's rifle actually carved through two dozen of them with his Kukuri. There's situations where blades actually do work out, its a range of almost twenty four feet that they are effective to against a person with a rifle.

It's Shinobi because Spy + Sword.

Localization is changed in XComGame.INT for English; XComGame.FRA for French, etc.

These lines are the descriptors for the class.

[LWS_Shinobi X2SoldierClassTemplate]
DisplayName="Shinobi"
ClassSummary="The Shinobi serves as our primary scouting unit, using a sword to deliver stealthy close-range attacks."
LeftAbilityTreeTitle="Saboteur"
RightAbilityTreeTitle="Kenshi"

Don't change "Shinobi" outside of text strings (such as LWS_Shinobi) or you'll break it.

Because when you are over-run, Shinobi is your only hope.

Sounds like a quite odd and bug-prone way to do it when you could just edit a few lines in a localization file.. O_o

Would it would soothe your precious master-race pride to know that even honkies used swords at one point?

Following that logic; if you were using the lightsabers mod, would you have Obi-Wan Shinobi?

I regret nothing!
