First impressions

Post by ZutCorp »

HI,

I have been playing for a few hours now, around 10 missions or so.

What I find interesting is how varied they have been.
    • I have had missions where i took my time and setup a great ambush, to kill a mnuton in one turn.
I have had missions where I have had so sneak along the adges, kill one group, rescued the VIP and then boogies
I have had a mission where I was uverwhelmed, send in a specialist to free the VIP, who then ran from cover to cover an miraculously made it to extraction. The poor specialist didn't.
Ive had a few missions where my xcom2 vanilla habits got me killed - after a reload i discovered that it was far better to dig in and have a prolonged firefight - no need to alphastrike everything.
I'm really digging it so far. Challenging and a lot more varied than vanilla.

my experience has been similar

though ive found excessive usage of explosives and flamethrowers far more desireable then prolonged fights

Smash, Burn and Return are Victory squads motto

Just a note: Technicals are very good in the early game, but don't get too reliant on them. As the campaign progresses and there are more enemies and bigger missions their burst potential wanes and you may find yourself unprepared for what lies ahead. ;)

Thanks for the impressions

My problem with explosives is how unreliable they are though. In vanilla, after a few months as enemies get armor and more hp they can't 1-shot anymore, but you've got stronger guns by then. Here, even on day 1 in gatecrashers I've not yet had a grenade kill a 3 hp trooper. Always end up doing just 1 or 2 damage. Then I get a 5 when it hits a sectoid or an officer. >.<

I really miss the guaranteed always going to deal exactly this much damage from vanilla. I'm sure when I finally do 1-shot a trooper with a grenade I'll end up cheering out loud and it will be in the middle of the night and piss off my roommates. hehe.
