With a few pistol perks they can become quite strong. Fan fire -> lightning hands -> snap shot, that is a lot of damage in one turn. I'm still learning the details. With Shadowstrike, would be best to open with an AoE, Saturation Fire or Iron Curtain, especially if also have Bring 'Em On, which buffs crit damage. Personally, what really makes me dislike using their abilities is loot destruction. Blasty grenadiers can get needle grenades, but technicals are stuck destroying loot with both rocket and flamerthrower, so I use them exceedingly sparingly. It's a fairly easy edit, but I really think this should be in the options menu, to each their own, people have different preferences on how they want to play, let them play their way.

I build mine around what AWC perks they get...
I just had one kill about 20 aliens on turn 1 with Reaper, that was neat. (Gunner with Fleche, Blademaster and Reaper. Also Rapid Reaction).
I literally pulled every pod on the map turn 1 on a swarming troop transport.

Personally what I did was edit the psi training times back to vanilla, they're long enough already considering they have to go on field missions to rank up in between as well. Pavonis went seriously overboard with the whole "make everything take longer" aspect for the PsiOps.

One neat thing I've taken note of, is that aside from the powers, their blank slate when it comes to regular perks means they don't have much of the power perks locked out by ability restrictions, so they can get very neat AWC combinations, so it's not entirely unusual to get some powerhouse combo.

Chain shot penalty is only -5 aim. Combat awareness gives you a point of armor, not half a point(how would that even work? Coinflip?) So against an adjacent target you can attack twice 2) Fleche grants bonus damage based on the distance between you and the target, which can easily make up the difference in base damage. This could easily be a vanilla XCom 2 bug.
I hacked one of those checkpoint towers and got a mind control on an enemy soldier for 5 turns.
The next turn I hacked a turret and gained control of that, when that succeeded, it gave me control of an additional enemy soldier, free of charge!

Hmm... I thought the limit on regional HQ missions(liberation finalé) was 8.
Haven't had issues with the tower mission yet, but I suppose worse is to come as time passes and the really tanky enemies start to show.

It may just be an information bug/oversight.
IE: next time the haven in that region gets a combat mission, the Mec should be there. There's just no way to tell other than actually starting one of those missions.

You will eventually start meeting chrysalids that burrow underground and attack without warning. Use overwatch for the month and beware of cities.
