I agree once you get to that level they become good but I find it such a slog getting them there.

Yeah but Bastion is super late game if at all. And it has some buggy interactions, possibly with hazmat cancelling it out.

I would bring a FK grenadier on a supply raid, a troop column, avenger defence, even a facility. Late game having a couple of EMP bombs is great on those missions. Yeah... Though IME lamp posts are often tactical rewards and/or the odds aren't great vs having rnfs dropped on you. It's the odd bonus here and there. Also sentinels and commandos are such spoilsports with their insane detection radius. Even with incinerator and stealth perks from AWC, you usually can't proactively stealth burn.

Heat only affects frags / plasma. Tandem affects all damaging grenades. Just not that much. Ordinarily minimum damage falls off with radius, but not maximum. If you look at the bottom of the mission screen when it pops it actually tells you how many faceless there are so you can decide whether to take on the mission.

I believe you don't have to do the mission. The faceless will still be gone from your haven. You just miss out on some loot/corpses and xp on your adviser. Which is no biggie in the late game.

Don't know the answer to your actual question though.

Thoughts on that. LCPL: Agreed. Has to be RD. CPL: If you're going to use any damage grenades then heavy ordnance is better than protector.
