Actually the devs thought of this scenario: if you liberate every region, the aliens retaliate by invading EVERY REGION simultaneously.

the AI does try to flank the cover you're using on said tank. Also you need to dispatch the ability-using enemies first, and there's more of those than there's "only-shooting" ones. The snipers (and off-tanks) need to be placed to take advantage of the flank attempts - the AI will expose ...

I want a 2nd tube for respec'ing. Some of my later assaults took an experimental build but I can only respec 1 as it takes the better part of a month to respec now.

If those 'early game troopers' are gunners, you should expect to lose someone whenever they are allowed to shoot. Murphy's law. Cover on its own is never enough. Thing with Snapshot Sharpshooters is that they seem to work in paper, but in the actual game the AI prefers to take cover paralel to your firing line, so you will rarely get to move your sniper to a flanking position from behind your line. While I have had one campaign where I needed a workshop just to keep excavating (I only had 2 engineers), that was also a campaign where I didn't do missions all the time. You can "cheat" using some Commander's Choice mod or reload until you get the chosen or at least an acceptable class. Which I consider perfectly valid - why should class choice be random? I used to, and now I consider it a fully fledged cheat. Not having to hold back with amazing rookies ...
