Re: ...about Xwynn's near disastrous mission last night...

I particularly enjoy the way he always thinks officers will just move and mark, and more often than not they just shoot him in the face.

Re: ...about Xwynn's near disastrous mission last night...

I look forward to watching it. I prefer the ones that go badly. More drama, more learning. Not just schadenfreude, honest! In general I'd say the opposite is true. SMGs are weak early on when 1 damage difference is a big deal. Later on the difference to a rifle is negligible. You just need to be at ...

Re: Rational decision making on Basic Research

I can't comment on the code. I can only comment on my experience. My memory is fairly clear on this.

It is conceivable this was changed during the development of 1.5 without being highlighted in the change log.

Re: Commander mag and psi rush campaigns

Sure the early snowball is effective. But my mag came in at the phase of the campaign when I was doing the latter part of 1st lib chain, the first supply raids and othet challenging missions. At which point mag weapons are very powerful vs a mix of m1s and m2s and the aliens that accompanies them (b...

Re: Commander mag and psi rush campaigns

As I say, mag rush worked well and was possibly superior to regular path. Major caveat is that was on Commander. Legend has longer research times and faster FL progression. Plus all enemies have more HP. That will make the period on ballistics rather harder. I find that research speed is often not m...

Re: Rational decision making on Basic Research

On that basis the best possible mission is prevent dark event to rescue scientist from cell/vehicle (i.e. there's a hack) with an intel package. This isn't possible actually. Missions to prevent Tactical Dark Events always give Intel + something (VIP if it's a rescue, PoI otherwise, Supplies if no ...

Re: Rational decision making on Basic Research

There isn't a huge difference between missions. Often the best ones are the hacks. Intel packages can be awesome (sci or engie) or terrible (stock + hair trigger). But you also get intel and a hack roll for an additional reward. On that basis the best possible mission is prevent dark event to rescue...

Re: Commander mag and psi rush campaigns

I've never rushed lib. Never really got the hang of manipulating the strategic layer enough to try. Also I imagine you don't want to be running tough lib chain missions with ballistics. I don't see how you could get coil in May. All out Mag rush gets the basics in earlyish May and advanced by end Ma...

Re: Commander mag and psi rush campaigns

Not as much or in the way you might think. By the time you get to centre mass you're nearly through your rush. At least on the mag rush. What I did find is that rifle users become relatively more valuable versus advanced weapon users. Because it will be some time longer before you get mag for those....

Commander mag and psi rush campaigns

Finally started a Legend campaign. Thought I'd share thoughts on two Commander campaigns. One mag rush / laser skip, one psi rush (i.e. first before lasers or any buildings). Summary of mag rush campaign: it worked very well on Commander. Rocky April and early May with just ballistics, but then abso...

Re: Discussion of current Legendary campaign

So lots of conflicting advice... I guess that means there is no one optimal approach - sign of a good game! This thread made me finally start my own Legend campaign. First one failed on 1st GOp. A 4-man jailbreak. Was going fine until last pod - viper activated from alert and straight up murdered my...

Re: Discussion of current Legendary campaign

LoS shenanigans are satisfying but usually not decisive and usually not worth the extra turn or two to set up. There's no reward for killing RNFs, so doing missions quickly and cleanly is best. Personally I hate activating with a grenade because it doesn't kill anything. I don't play with red fog so...

Re: Discussion of current Legendary campaign

I think you probably have to expect to do some ex light GOps with 4 soldiers. I do a few even on Commander. Hack workstation should be very viable with 4. Jailbreaks, extracts and train hacks are one notch harder. Relays, vehicle hacks/extracts and S&G are harder still with 4 IMO. Worth consider...

Re: Discussion of current Legendary campaign

On commander I always run a basic research after resistance comms and weapon mods. I have also run rush builds in 2 campaigns for mag and psi respectively. That gives me some experience in fighting up to May with ballistics, which may have some parallels for your Legend issues. My chief recommendati...

Re: Shooty shinobi?

I basically use two types of Shinobi, the Officer and the Support. I value high movement and decent defence/dodge as important stats and Aim between 60-65. Officer Ghostwalker, Shadowstep, Covert, Shadowstrike, Hunters Instinkt, Hit & Run, Conceal Almost all my squads are led by such a Shinobi ...

Nice write-up. Interesting that your experience of what's strong and what isn't necessarily the same as other players. Sign of a good balance probably!

Re: Epic fail

Just chiming in with the opposite. HQ raid culminates in a fight with an all M3 command pod that goes badly south. Two soldiers on last turn of bleedout. A third standing in the open in front of the general, having just failed to finish him in a desperation move. With a probable 3 deaths next turn t...

Re: worst dark event combos you ran into

Infestation is horrible. I hate burrow so much. So, so much. It's like having a concealed sentinel on overwatch in green alert, plus an extra large detection range. Alien infiltrators is horrible as you can't go near cars at all. Rapid response is manageable but horrible in combination of either of ...

I couldn't swear to it absolutely. Moderate heavy to v light is my best recollection but it was a while ago and I didn't write it down.

But those explanations make sense.

Re: Difficulty increase during infiltration

I've had one at moderate heavy get boosted down to very light. This is not uncommon at all for Supply Raids. Half of the Alert 7 schedules for Supply Raids are Moderate-Heavy (2 of 4 with the other 2 being one Moderate and one Heavy) and all Alert 3 schedules are Very Light. Boosting from 67% to 10...

Re: Timing your first liberation

I usually boost network towers and HQs. The network tower is because there's quite a lot of stuff to kill in 2 turns otherwise. And also if you don't manage to stealth to the objective, then it can be a tough fight with 5 soldiers. And if you lose that's a death blow for a campaign. The HQ is just f...

Re: Timing your first liberation

I just let it happens when it happens. Usually that's about late June or July. Even if I knew how, I would only want to attempt a network tower or HQ with weapon tech and my last two campaigns were alternative tech rushes, so for a mid May liberation I'd have to do at leas the network tower with bal...

Re: Rational decision making on Basic Research

That may well be good strategy. I confess I never use scientists to look for missions. I'm terrified of having an intel raid or vanilla retaliation in which the scientist can be easily murdered with little I can do about it. I'm not that sophisticated about trying to detect specific missions. UFO pr...

Re: Difficulty increase during infiltration

It's also possibly supply raids are a bit janky and/or there's high variance on the base strength which re-rolls when strength changes.

I've had one at moderate heavy get boosted down to very light.
