What made you think that will was the stat used for success/fail of insanity?
If it wasn't clear from the above post, the success/fail of insanity it's determined by the psi offense of the soldier and the will of the enemy.
This is true for domination as well.

As far as Faceless go, if the Alien Infiltrator Dark Event isn't running, you'll find them only in Capture VIP missions. I heard maybe regions with high strenght can have them, not sure. I think you only get a resistance MEC if the unit you hack is a MEC. It sounds like you used full override on a sectopod.
