I don't see how wound mechanics favour small squads. They seem to favour instead bringing enough soldiers to take as few wounds as possible, given that each wound is so expensive in terms of mission time lost. I save my highest mobility soldiers (if they have not too high defensive penalties) for assaults. Blue moves are king for them. Shinobi are fine with average to low-ish mobility, given the SMG bonus. But I also tend to not use vests for shinobi.

I would bring 2 rangers and 1 assault over 3 rangers, even before the Tech Sergeant level. With the exception of Shinobi, no one else can run suppression and waste enemy OW, crit harder and more consistently, and reach hard to kill enemies like an assault. Hunter's Instinct, on an Assault. I don't build shooty shinobis. Implacable on Assaults would be utterly broken, but it's fairly good on Rangers and most people. Interference, on shinobi if it doesn't break stealth. Most perks are pretty good at what they do already, there's not that many level-ups ...

Also, giving your assaults hazmat suits will let them bait out poison spits when approaching and not attacking. Oh, and incendiaries too. You don't have to shoot with the assault every turn. My assaults approach with blue move and hunker if no shots present themselves. It forces the enemy to reposition themselves or get flanked. If you get the continent bonus of 33% reduced costs for Proving Grounds. Other than that, I find a mod which I use often and have 3 elite ones and upgrade that all the way. It's pretty awesome when everyone is sporting Elite Scopes, Suppressors or Extended Mags.

My Needle Grenadiers lose a bit of steam before plasma. The Biggest Booms buff should help, and I think maybe if Boosted Cores gave 2points of damage to plasma but only 1 to special grenades, that might even up the playing field. I thought that the command pod was going to be the hardest part, because I can't afford to take any solid hits without predator. Hence the double sniper comp while rangers shoot/hunker/smoke/pray.
